These Championships were held over three days with the Relays only being held on Day 1, May 9th (see separate report) and the individual events being held over two days, Day 2 & 3, May 11th and 12th –
The sun came out on Day 2 of these Championships as we all headed to the Glenmore Track in Bush. Eleven of our athletes took to the track and field giving it their all to each of them winning a place on the podium. Our youngest athlete on the day Caoimhe Carolan impressively took home the silver in the U12 60m hurdles in an exciting photo finish on the line. Kay Mothiram our national medallist was in throwing form coming away with the gold for the U14 javelin and shot put. Three of our U15 girls came away with the silver, Samantha McCarron 2nd in the javelin, Ruth Gillespie 2nd in the 200m and Hallie Sands 2nd in the 80m hurdles and finishing the day for the girls was Aoibheann Carolan who came 3rd in the U17 200m and happily took home the gold in the long jump. The boys were equally impressive with Tom Maguire and Senan Lundon coming 1st and 2nd respectively in the U12 60m hurdles and Tom taking home the silver in the long jump. Ashyn Mothiram, new to the U12 shot put was delighted with his silver and Charlie Sands also new to the U13 javelin impressively came away with the gold. Charlie alongside club mate Jack Dowdall both took 1st and 2nd place on the podium for the U13 60m hurdles with Jack soon adding another gold on the day in the U13 long jump. Finishing the day for the boys was Jack McCarron who came 3rd in the U14 200m and was happy heading home with the silver in the 1500m.
Numbers swelled on Day 3 of the championships with the U9s, U10s and U11s joining the competition. Competing for the first time for our club, giving it their all were Neansai Caffrey, Ruri Mothiram, Max O’Sullivan, Eabha Caffrey, Roisin Halpenny, Molly Keenan, John McLoughlin and Conall Halpenny. There’s plenty more to come from these young athletes as they performed exceptionally well for their first attempt at competition. With events underway the first to hit the podium was Jack McCarron taking the bronze in the U14 long jump and he was soon followed to the bronze position by Alex Callan with team mate Danny Cirdei jumping into gold position for the U10s. Equally impressive was TomJoe McCormack coming 4th for the U9s and Lily Breen making the top 8 for the U11s. Our U12 Caoimhe Carolan and U13 Gabrielle Ruškyte were throwing well today making the top 8 in the turbo javelin with U11s Jessica McCarron and Fintan Kelly both coming 4th. Also in throwing form were Tom Maguire, Ashyn Mothiram and Dylan McCarron, all coming 2nd, 3rd and 4th respectively for the U12s but triumphant on the podium was U10 Finn Osborn and U9 Harry Breen both taking the gold. In the shot put we had more impressive throwing from the girls with gold going to Aoibheann Carolan U17, Eireann Hoey U16 and Órlaith Carolan U15. Silver went to Rebecca McCarron U16 and bronze to Ava McNally U15. We had medal success too in the sprints with gold going to Oran Lynch in the U10 60m and Jack Dowdall in the U13 80m. It was silver for Órlaith Carolan in the U15 100m and Aoibheann Carolan in the U17 100m and bronze for Tom Maguire in the U12 60m. Our U9 relay winning team of Harry Breen, TomJoe McCormack, Kristupas Ruškys and Jokubas Ruškys had a busy day competing in all four events with all four placing in the top 8 in a split timed 300m final. Oran Lynch and Alex Callan came 2nd & 3rd respectively in the U10 300m and Jack Dowdall ran his heart out to finish 3rd in the 600m. Finishing the day and the competition for our club was seasoned athlete, Abbie Sheridan taking home the gold in both the U19 High Jump and 800m.
Our club has enjoyed wonderful success at this year’s championships and equally the championships’ themselves have been a massive success in its newly changed format. We congratulate every one of our athletes who competed over the 3 days and especially thank and congratulate Athletics Louth and all their volunteers for a well organised, fun filled successful 2019 Track & Field Championship.
