On Saturday last Ardee and District A.C. athlete Conor McMahon travelled to Celbridge for the Leinster combined events. Conor was competing in the boys u16 pentathlon over the five disciplines.
First event of the day was the 100m hurdles followed quickly by the shot putt. Conor was nicely placed in second after these 2 events. Over at the long jump his massive leap of 5.66m earned him a new personal best and also moved him into first place among a strong field of 13.
With the high jump placed on the sprint track Conor was only able to take his mark from seven strides out. This however did not deter the young athlete and clearing the bar at 1.64m was enough to secure Conor a lead of 254 points going into his weakest event the 800m.
Conor ran a steady race throughout finishing in the middle of the pack with a time of 2.28.28. Forty minutes passed and the agonising wait was over as Conor was called to the podium for first place. Conor deservedly took the Leinster title for the third consecutive year.
